Traffic Crash with Injury in Whitley County

(LONDON, Ky.) -- On November 21, 2012 at 6:18 PM, the Kentucky State Police, Post 11 in London received a call of a vehicle traffic crash with injuries at the 4 1/2 mile marker on Interstate 75 in Whitley County, KY.
Upon arrival TFC Parrish Baker determined that a 1995, black, GMC, van operated by Vernon N. Jacobs, 63, of Indianapolis, IN was traveling southbound on I-75, in the left lane, when it drifted to the right almost hitting a tractor-trailer. The operator of the van swerved to the left to avoid contact with the tractor-trailer and lost control. The van entered the grass median, overturned and came to rest in the northbound left lane. Upon coming to rest, the van was then struck by a blue, 2012, Peterbilt, tractor-trailer, operated by Harold Fitzwater, 37, of Nancy, KY, which was northbound.
Jacobs, who was seat belted, and three (3) his passengers, Rose Jacobs, 41, Linda Jacobs, 51 and Christopher Thompson, 19, all of Indianapolis, IN, and not seat belted, were transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville with non-life threatening injuries. A fourth passenger in the van, Alphonso Jacobs, Sr., 60, of Indianapolis, IN, who was not seat belted, was transported to the Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin, KY with non-life threatening injuries.
Fitzwater, who was seat belted, was not injured.
No Drug or Alcohol usage suspected.
Interstate 75 was block for approximately 4 1/2 hours due to the crash.
TFC Baker is continuing the investigation and was assisted at the scene by officers of the Kentucky State Police, Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement and the Whitley County EMS.
