Cumberland Man Airlifted From A Collision on US 119

Date of News Release: 08/28/2012

(HARLAN, KY) -- On Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012 at approximately 9:40 a.m. KSP Post 10 Troopers arrived on the scene of a crash involving a pickup truck and garbage truck on U.S. 119.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 2000 Chevrolet pickup operated by Ronnie Clark, 17, of Cumberland, was attempting to turn left from the Harlan County High School onto U.S. 119. At that time, the pickup made contact with a 1996 Chevrolet garbage truck traveling south on U.S. 119.

The driver of the garbage truck, Paul Smith, 53, of Lynch, was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt.

Mr. Clark was trapped inside the pickup and was removed by emergency personnel. He was not wearing a seat belt. He was airlifted from the scene by AirEvac to Holston Valley Medical Center, in Kingsport, Tenn.

Alcohol or drugs are not suspected. Blood was obtained from both drivers.

The crash remains under investigation by Trooper Rodney Sturgill.

KSP Det. Michael Cornett, Sgt. Rob Farley, troopers Jared Boggs, James Earl Hensley, Brandon Burton, the Harlan County Sheriff's Office, the Harlan County Rescue Squad and LifeCare Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
