Date of News Release: 02/17/2012

(Grays Knob, Ky.) - The Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan, would like to make citizens aware of a current scam currently going on in Harlan County.

On Thursday citizens in the Cumberland area have been receiving phone calls from subjects in Bolivia. They are requesting that these people take money to their local Western Union and send money to them because their grandson or family member has been jailed or hospitalized. This is all made up it's one of the biggest going scams right now. If anyone from a foreign country requests money by phone, mail or email that you don't know simply ignore them.

KSP Trooper Jason Joseph is currently investigating some of the incidents in the Cumberland area. These scammers prey on the elderly and extort money from them. If these people from Bolivia have contacted anyone in the Cumberland area, they should contact Kentucky State Police at Post 10 at 606-573-3131.
