Update to the Fatal Fire in Powell County

Date of News Release: 11/11/2011

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On September 22, 2011 Kentucky State Police Morehead received a call for service on an explosion and subsequent house fire on Paint Creek Road in Stanton, KY. Multiple fire departments were dispatched to the scene along with Kentucky State Police Troopers. Upon arrival it was determined that Stanly Roberts, 84, Of Stanton was still inside the residence. Mr. Roberts was found deceased in the kitchen area of the home. Karen S Knox of Winchester was also inside the residence at the time of the fire but was able to exit the residence. Karen S Knox was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington on September 22, 2011 and was later pronounced deceased by University of Kentucky Medical Staff on November 11, 2011 at 4:08 PM due to complications caused by injuries sustained during the fire. The cause of the fire is still undetermined and is believed to be accidental. No foul play is suspected. The Incident remains under investigation by Detective Virgil Rucker and Detective Shane Barnes.

Roberts of Clay City was also inside the residence at the time of the fire but was able to exit the residence. Jerry M. Roberts was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington on September 22, 2011 and was later pronounced deceased by University of Kentucky Medical Staff on September 30, 2011 at 12:25 PM due to complications caused by injuries sustained during the fire. The cause of the fire is still undetermined and is believed to be accidental. No foul play is suspected. The Incident remains under investigation by Detective Virgil Rucker and Detective Shane Barnes.

Fatal Fire in Powell County

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On September 22, 2011 Kentucky State Police Morehead received a call for service of an explosion and subsequent house fire on Paint Creek Road Stanton, KY. Multiple fire departments were dispatched to the scene along with Kentucky State Police Morehead units. Upon arrival it was determined that Stanley Roberts, 84, of Stanton was still inside the residence. Mr. Roberts was found deceased in the kitchen area of the home. Karen Knox of Winchester and Jerry Roberts of Clay City were inside the residence at the time of the fire but were able to exit the residence. All attempts to assist Stanley Roberts from the residence were unsuccessful. Karen Knox and Jerry Roberts were both airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, KY with life-threatening injuries. Both subjects were last listed in critical condition. The cause of the fire is undetermined. The fire is believed to be accidental. No foul play is suspected. The investigation continues by Kentucky State Police Morehead.
