Charges on a murder suspect from a 1998 cold case file

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On January 22, 1998, at approximately 5:30 AM, Michael Dean Bartley was returning to his residence in Ezel, KY, Morgan County, when he was killed by an unknown person. Mr. Bartley was struck several times in the head and died just inside his yard.

Detective Donnie McGraw has been investigating this Murder case in the cold case files at the Kentucky State Police Post in Morehead. During Detective McGraw's investigation in the past year, he pursued leads and his investigation led him to a suspect in the case. On August 18, 2011, Detective McGraw presented his investigation to the Morgan County Grand Jury, who returned indictments on the suspect. On August 23, 2011, Detective Donnie McGraw obtained warrants for 36 year old Shane Elkins, of Menifee County, charging him with Murder. Shane Elkins is currently an inmate at Mount Olive Correctional Center in West Virginia serving a sentence on other charges.
