Non-Injury collision involving a KSP patrol cruiser

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On March 5, 2011, at 0019 Trooper Michael Wathen, was conducting a traffic stop on the westbound shoulder of Kentucky 32. Trooper Wathen parked his patrol vehicle facing west and administered a field sobriety test to an individual in front of his patrol vehicle. Trooper Wathen advised Kentucky State Police Post 8 Morehead dispatch his patrol vehicle was struck from the rear and involved in a two vehicle non-injury collision. Micheal D. Jolly was traveling west on the westbound shoulder of Kentucky 32. Mr. Jolly's 2002 Nissan Altima struck the rear of the 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. Mr. Jolly accelerated his vehicle against the patrol vehicle after impact. Mr. Jolly's vehicle came to final rest. Trooper Scott Caudill and Trooper Whitney Howard responded to the scene. Mr. Jolly refused verbal commands to turn off the ignition and exit the vehicle. Mr. Jolly refused to show his hands. Trooper Howard used her state issued baton to bust out the passenger's side window in an attempt to gain control of Mr. Jolly. Trooper Wathen unlocked the doors by reaching through the busted window. Trooper Caudill opened the driver's side door and extracted Mr. Jolly. Subject became belligerent and cursed at officers on scene. Mr. Jolly was taken into custody and lodged at Rowan County Detention Center without further incident. Mr. Jolly was charged with Disorderly Conduct Second Degree, Menacing, Operating Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol/Drugs, ect .08 1st, and Wanton Endangerment 2nd Degree on Police Officer. The collision remains under investigation by Sergeant Jeff Lewis.
