One killed in an ATV collision on KY57

(Morehead, Ky.) -- On February 27, 2011, Kentucky State Police, Morehead received a call from Lewis County Dispatch of a two vehicle accident. Trooper Eugene Robinson, Trooper Chad Bowling, Trooper Mary Syversten, and Sergeant Rob Conn responded to the scene. Michael Sowder was traveling southbound on KY57 operating a Yamaha Grizzly 700 four-wheeler that was pulling a Yamaha CR 80 dirt bike that Robbie Malone was riding. Keith Ruark was traveling northbound on KY57 in a 1994 Ford Ford F150. Both vehicles met at the same time, the tow strap that secured the Yamaha CR 80 to the Yamaha Grizzly four-wheeler broke, causing the Yamaha CR 80 to enter the northbound lane and sticking Mr. Ruark. Mr. Malone was pronounced deceased onscne by Lewis County Coroner Tony Gaydos. Next of kin has been notified at the scene. No autopsy will be preformed. Mr. Sowder was arrested and charged with operating on a suspended/revoked operators license, operating an ATV on a roadway, no insurance, and operating an ATV without headgear. Mr. Sowder is being lodged at Lewis County Detention Center. Accident remains under investigation by Detective Toby Gardner.
