Date of News Release: 12/17/2011

(Richmond, Ky.) -- On December 17, 2011 at 8:29 am EST the Kentucky State Police, Richmond Post, received a burglary in progress call from Steven Womack. Mr. Womack stated that he had caught someone breaking into his residence on Hager Drive. Sergeant Harvey Baxter and Trooper Doug Cole were dispatched to the area. Upon their arrival Mr. Womack stated that he found Steven Murphy, 38 years old, in the process of burglarizing his home on Hager Drive. Mr. Womack attempted to hold Mr. Murphy at gunpoint until KSP units could arrive. As they waited Mr. Murphy attempted to flee out of a window and in the process of doing so he looked back at Mr. Womack and made a motion of reaching toward his pocket. At this point Mr. Womack feared for his life and fired his weapon striking Mr. Murphy three times.

Mr. Murphy was transported to the University of Kentucky hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Detective Ken Bradley has been assigned the case and it is still under investigation.
