Update to the Injury collision involving a bus in Hart County

Date of News Release: 11/03/2011

(Bowling Green, KY) - At 8:46 A.M. (CST) Kentucky State Police Bowling Green responded to I 65 southbound around the 53 mile point. The collision occurred approximately one mile North of Cave City, Kentucky.

According to Trooper Joel Huff, the driver of the school bus, Lawrence Austin Sr (39) of Louisville, Kentucky was travelling south on I 65. When an unknown white tractor trailer passed the school bus, Mr. Austin lost control of his bus causing him to exit the right side of the roadway. The bus then overturned while going down an embankment. There was no evidence that indicated that the white tractor trailer impacted the school bus.

There were a total of 16 students and three adults on the bus at the time of the collision. All 19 people were transported to T. J. Samson Community where they were treated for various non life threatening injuries.

One adult passenger was later transported to University of Louisville Hospital by EMS. Two of the children were later transported to Kosair's Children's Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky by private means and one child was transported to Kosair's Children's Hospital by EMS.

The investigation is still ongoing and is still under the direction of Trooper Joel Huff. Speed does not seem to be a factor in the collision. The bus was on a field trip going to Mammoth Cave National Park.

Trooper Huff was assisted on scene by Troopers B.J. Eaton, Jonathan McChesney, Daniel White, Cave City Police Department, and the Barren and Hart County EMS.
