Injury collision on I-65 Warren County

(Bowling Green, Ky.) -- On Wednesday, July 27, 2011, around 1:10 p.m., Kentucky State Police Post 3 Bowling Green responded to the 22 mile marker on I 65 in Warren County regarding an injury collision.
According to Trooper Tomie Walters, Unit 1, a 2004 GMC Envoy driven by Aldolfo Barrera (78) of McAllen, Texas, was traveling southbound in the right lane on Interstate 65 near mile marker 22. Unit 2, a FedEx tractor trailer, driven by Ricky Gray (56) of Memphis, Tennessee, was traveling southbound on I-65 in the center lane.
According to Mr. Barrera, he fell asleep behind the wheel. His vehicle crossed the center line where it collided into the passenger side trailer of Unit 2. Mr. Barrera overcorrected after the impact which caused the passenger, who was an unrestrained child in the rear of his vehicle, to be ejected through the rear passenger side window landing on his back. Mr. Barrera ran off the right shoulder of the roadway traveling approximately 30 feet up a slight embankment before he came to a stop after colliding into a small group of trees. Mr. Barrera and his seven passengers were taken to the Medical Center in Bowling Green, where seven of them were treated for non -life threatening injuries. The child who was ejected from the vehicle was flown by Air Evac to Vanderbilt, where he is currently being treated for head trauma. Mr. Gray was uninjured during the collision.
The collision is being investigated by Trooper Tomie Walters, and he was assisted on scene by Trooper Mike Hatler, Bowling Green and Alvaton Fire Departments, Medcom, and Air Evac.
