Four Vehicle Injury Collision in Hart County
Date of News Release: 06/06/2011
(Bowling Green, Ky.) -- On Sunday, June 5, 2011, Kentucky State Police Post 3 Bowling Green, responded to a four vehicle injury collision on I 65 at the 55 mile point in Hart County, Kentucky.
Walter E. Cothrum (62) of Russellville, AL, was traveling northbound in the right hand lane on I-65 near the 55 mile marker, when his vehicle was sideswiped by a vehicle driven by Delmar Peck (42), Soosland, IL. Mr. Cothrum was able to regain control of his vehicle, and stopped in the right hand emergency lane. Mr. Peck's vehicle spun out of control and came to rest when it struck the barrier cables.
Terry Conley (44) Orlando, FL, was traveling northbound and observed Mr. Cothrum's vehicle stopped in the emergency lane, so she merged into the left hand lane. Ms Conley stated that prior to her making the lane change, she did not observe Mr. Peck's vehicle in the left hand lane resting against the barrier cables, due to the darkness and its vehicular lights being inoperable from the previous collision. Mrs. Conley's vehicle then struck Mr. Peck's vehicle. After this impact, Mrs. Conley's vehicle traveled from the left hand lane and into the right hand emergency lane. The fourth vehicle, which was a tractor trailer driven by Tyrone A. Herbert (43) Morrow, GA, also observed Mr. Cothrum's disabled vehicle and merged into the left lane. The tractor trailer also struck Mr. Peck's vehicle.
The tractor trailer then traveled back across the roadway where it struck Mrs. Conley's vehicle in the rear. The tractor trailer continued off of the right side of the roadway and traveled approximately 50 yards where it came to a rest in the tree line.
After the first collision with Mr. Cothrum, Mr. Peck was trying to exit his vehicle. When the tractor trailer struck Mr. Peck's vehicle, Mr. Peck was ejected from the driver's side door and into the roadway.
Mr. Peck was flown from the scene by Air Methods to the University of Louisville Hospital for head trauma.
An eight-year old passenger in Ms. Conley's vehicle was transported to T.J. Samson Community Hospital by Hart County EMS. She was later flown by Air Methods to Kosair's Children Hospital.
A two-year old passenger in Ms. Conley's vehicle was transported to T. J. Samson Community Hospital by Hart County EMS. She was treated and released.
All passengers were wearing their seatbelts.
Trooper Wesley Medley is investigating the collision, and he was assisted on scene by Tpr. Derek Grant, Tpr. Justin Rountree, Hart County EMS, Horse Cave Fire Department, Air Methods, State HWY Dept. and Alvey's Towing.
