Officer Involved Shooting Hopkins County

Hanson, KY. (Hopkins County) -- The Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting after responding to a call of a suicidal subject.

On Monday, December 5, 2011, at approximately 4:40 p.m, the Kentucky State Police Post 2 Madisonville received a call in reference to a man that was threatening suicide. The Hopkins County Sheriff's Department had received a call in reference to the same complaint approximately 4 minutes earlier. The location was 85 Section House Lane in Hanson. The suicidal subject, identified as Dustin R. Barnes, age 25 of Hanson, KY, was armed with a shotgun.

Hopkins County Sheriff Frank Latham, Deputy Otis Chamberlain, Deputy Mark Gentry, Deputy Jamie Lampton, and KSP Trooper Ryan Fox responded to the scene. Upon arriving, the Sheriff's Department made contact with Mr. Barnes via the phone.

At approximately 5:44 p.m., Mr. Barnes exited the house and fired his weapon at the officers. Deputy Gentry, Deputy Lampton, and Trooper Fox were struck. Officers returned fire and struck Mr. Barnes. Mr. Barnes and the three officers were transported to the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville for treatment.

Mr. Barnes succumbed to his injuries and passed at the Regional Medical Center. Deputy Gentry and Trooper Fox were treated and released. Deputy Lampton was scheduled for surgery; however, at the present time his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

Trooper Fox has been placed on paid administrative leave, pursuant to Kentucky State Police policy. The investigation is continuing by the Kentucky State Police.

The Hopkins County Sheriff's Department, the Hanson Volunteer Fire Department, and Medical Center Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
