Fairview, KY (Christian and Todd Counties) -- The Kentucky State Police are investigating a shooting after a pursuit through two counties.

On Saturday December 03, 2011 at approximately 7:42 pm the Kentucky State Police Post 2 Madisonville responded to Champion Highway in Christian County Kentucky in reference to a suspicious vehicle. When Trooper James McArthur arrived he located the vehicle on Beeker Road. Trooper McArthur attempted to stop this vehicle by initiating his emergency equipment. The vehicle then started to flee and Trooper McArthur started to pursue this vehicle for failure to yield.

The vehicle turned onto Rosetown Road where it intentionally struck Trooper McArthur's cruiser. This vehicle then stopped off of the roadway and when Trooper McArthur exited his vehicle to approach the fleeing vehicle the driver started driving toward Trooper McArthur in an attempt to run over Trooper McArthur. At this time Trooper McArthur was forced to defend himself by firing his service weapon striking the driver. The vehicle then continued to flee from Rosetown Road onto US 68 heading east. The vehicle then turned onto Morton Lane then onto Arthur Henderson Road in Todd County, Kentucky. At this time the vehicle was stopped and the driver was removed from the vehicle.

An ambulance was called for the driver of this vehicle and he was transported to Jennie Stuart Medical Center and then later air lifted by AirEvac to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. The suspects condition is unknown at this time.

Trooper James McArthur has been placed on paid administrative leave pursuant to Kentucky State Police policy. Trooper James McArthur is a 8-year veteran of the Kentucky State Police.
