3 Vehicle Injury Collision in Hopkins County

Date of News Release: 09/30/2011

(Madisonville, Ky.) -- Mrs. Kristin M. Smith was traveling northbound on KY 109. Mr. James A. DeHart, a rural mail carrier, was stopped delivering mail to 5050 KY 109. Mr. Mitchell Trotter was traveling southbound on KY 109. Mr. DeHart was stopped delivering mail to an address on KY 109 when Mrs. Smith attempted to pass Mr. DeHart. Mrs. Smith realized that Mr. Trotter was traveling southbound and applied her brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision. Mrs. Smith then struck the left hand rear corner of Mr. DeHart's vehicle with the right hand rear corner of her vehicle. Mrs. Smith's vehicle then struck the left side of Mr. Trotter's vehicle with the left hand front corner. Mrs. Smith's and Mr. DeHart's vehicles exited the northbound shoulder of the roadway coming to final rest upright. Mr. Trotter's vehicle exited the southbound shoulder coming to final rest upright on the southbound shoulder. Mrs. Smith was transported to Regional Medical Center via Medical Center Ambulance Service for treatment. Trooper Nick Rice investigated the crash that occurred on Friday, September 30, 2011 at approximately 9:15 a.m. Trooper Bob Winters, Trooper Ben Sawyer, the Charleston Fire Department, the Dawson Springs Fire Department, and Medical Center Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
