Arrest is made in 1998 Murray State dorm fire

Date of News Release: 09/22/2011

(Murray, KY) -- A Paducah man has been indicted and charged in connection to a Murray State University dorm fire from 1998. Thirty-five-year-old, Jerry Walker, was indicted by a Calloway County Grand Jury on Wednesday after two days of Kentucky State Police and Murray Fire Department testimony.

On September 18th, 1998, Michael Minger, a Murray State University student, was killed after a fire ripped through the 4th floor of Hester Hall, a student dormitory at the university. Many others received injuries due to the incident. Kentucky State Police determined the fire to be arson and charged then 22-year-old Jerry Walker with the murder and arson. The case went to trial in 2001 and resulted in a hung jury.

In early 2010 Kentucky State Police investigators began an extensive review of the case. This review resulted in a new presentation of findings to a Calloway County Grand Jury. On September 21, 2011, Jerry Walker was indicted for Manslaughter 2nd Degree, Arson 1st Degree, Assault 2nd Degree, and 14 counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree. On Thursday morning, Mr. Walker turned himself into Kentucky State Police and will be lodged in the Calloway County Detention Center. The investigation is ongoing by Detective Jerry Jones and Detective Frank Gresham with the Kentucky State Police and Investigator Dickie Walls with the Murray Fire Department.
