Check Fraud Investigation
Date of News Release: 08/23/2011
(Eddyville, KY)- On July 26, 2011 Kentucky State Police were contacted by the Eddyville Police Department to assist in the investigation of checks being forged on an account for Lyon County EMS payroll. It was determined that a number of blank payroll checks for Lyon County EMS had somehow been removed from Thurman Campbell Accounting in Princeton, KY. The checks eventually fell into the hands of the unidentified African-American male pictured below. This gentleman has cashed three of the fraudulent payroll checks to date. Two were cashed at First Kentucky Bank Branches in Mayfield, and one at CFSB in Benton. KY. The perpetrator has also illegally obtained the name and account number of at least three individuals, and has used their information as his own to cash these forged checks. The unidentified male will enter the bank or the drive-thru with a pre filled deposit slip and ask to deposit the majority of the check into the account, but will take a smaller amount of the check for himself as cash. Once this transaction is complete it takes the bank 24-48 hours to determine the check is fraudulent, and the bank is then unable to recover whatever amount of money the man was given. Kentucky State Police ask that anyone with information on the identity of this man please contact the Kentucky State Police, Post 1 at 270-856-3721, or if they wish to remain anonymous call 1-800-222-5555. The case remains under investigation by Detective Brett Miller.
