Injury collision on the Purchase Parkway

Date of News Release: 07/08/2011

(Wingo, Ky.) -- A two-year-old child is in serious condition after a single vehicle collision on the Purchase Parkway Thursday evening. Kentucky State Police responded to a report of an overturned van at the 14 mile marker of the Purchase Parkway just after 5:00 PM on Thursday. An investigation revealed that a 1992 Dodge minivan with seven occupants was traveling south on the parkway headed for Union City Tennessee. As the van approached the exit 14 merge ramp, an unknown vehicle traveling off the exit ramp merged into the vanís path onto the southbound lane. The driver of the van, Ms. Chonte Cross of Union City, made an evasive maneuver around the vehicle to avoid a collision. The sudden change in roadway position caused the van to overturn in the median of the parkway. All seven occupants of the van suffered injury and were transported to Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield. A two-year-old occupant was ejected from the vehicle and suffered severe injury. He was air lifted to a hospital in Memphis Tennessee. Preliminary investigation shows that the two-year-old might not have been properly secured in a child safety seat. The roadway was closed for several hours due to the collision. Kentucky State Police was assisted at the scene by the Graves County Sheriff, Mayfield EMS/Rescue, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The investigation is continuing by Trooper Alison Ramsey of the Kentucky State Police.
