Fatal School Bus Collision in Carlisle County

(Cunningham, Ky.) -- A school bus crash in Carlisle County has resulted in the death of a six-year-old student returning from a school field trip. At approximately 1:40 CST, a Carlisle County school bus was traveling west on US Highway 62 near Cunningham, Kentucky. The school bus was carrying 27, 1st and 2nd grade students as they returned from a school trip near Paducah, Kentucky. For unknown reasons, the bus left the right side of the roadway and traveled on the grass covered shoulder. The bus then returned to the roadway and began to rotate counter-clockwise before rolling over into a steep embankment on the south side of US Highway 62. A six-year-old boy was pronounced deceased at the scene. Sixteen children and an adult were transported to three area hospitals for various injuries. The bus driver was air lifted to a hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO. An adult chaperone was air lifted to a Memphis hospital. Kentucky State Police was assisted at the scene by emergency services from Carlisle, Ballard, and McCracken Counties. State Police continue to investigate the cause of the collision. The investigation is continuing by Trooper Thomas Clifton with the Kentucky State Police.
