Three arrested on theft charges after traffic stop
Date of News Release: 02/10/2011
(Paducah, Ky.) -- On February 13, 2011, Kentucky State Police Trooper Eric Fields made a traffic stop at the eastbound weigh scales on Interstate 24 for speeding which he observed in Livingston County. The vehicle was occupied by three women from Tennessee. During the course of the traffic stop, Trooper Fields received consent to search the vehicle. During the search, Trooper Fields found several items of clothing which had department store security tags on them. He also found department store bags which were empty, however, there were no purchase receipts for the clothing. Trooper Fields identified Latonya Bright as the driver of the vehicle and arrested her for the traffic violations he observed. Two of the women were released and the wrecker driver transported them to Eddyville to wait for someone to come pick them up.
While transporting Ms. Bright to the McCracken County jail, Trooper Fields contacted McCracken County Central Dispatch to inquire if they were working any shoplifting complaints. McCracken County Central Dispatch contacted the stores on the security tags and confirmed they did have some items shoplifted earlier in the day. Trooper Daniel Jones made contact with the two women in Eddyville, where they voluntarily were transported to the McCracken County Sheriff's Office. The store managers identified all three women as the individuals they suspected of shoplifting their merchandise. Trooper Fields and Trooper Jones arrested Michelle Beasley and Tonyala Crowell, and all three women were lodged in the McCracken County Jail.
Trooper Fields charged Ms. Bright with speeding, failure to provide proof of insurance, driving on a suspended operator's license, license to be in possession, five counts of theft by unlawful taking - shoplifting under $10,000, and receiving stolen property under $10,000. He charged Ms. Crowell with theft by unlawful taking - shoplifting under $10,000 and receiving stolen property under $10,000. He charged Ms. Beasley with five counts of theft by unlawful taking - shoplifting under $10,000, receiving stolen property under $10,000, criminal mischief 3rd degree, and giving false name or address to an officer. Trooper Jones charged Ms. Beasley with resisting arrest and fleeing and evading on foot. Kentucky State Police was assisted by the McCracken County Sheriff's Office.
