Trooper injured in a collision on I-64

Date of News Release: 11/22/2011

(Ashland, KY) -- The Kentucky State Police in Ashland is investigating a two vehicle collision involving a trooper that occurred this morning (11/22/2011) around 0650 AM. The collision occurred on I-64 around the 159 milepost in Carter County. Trooper Matt Ridener had just finished investigating a non-injury collision at the 159 milepost and had positioned his cruiser (with emergency lights engaged) onto the eastbound lanes of travel in order for the wrecker service to remove the damaged vehicle.

A few minutes later, another wrecker driven by Roger Gullet, was traveling eastbound in the slow lane of travel and apparently did not see the cruiser. Gullet struck the cruiser causing it to slam into an earth embankment. Gullet was operating a 1999 Ford Roll-back wrecker. Trooper Ridener was sitting in the 2010 Ford Cruiser (Crown Victoria). Gullet was uninjured but Trooper Ridener sustained head injuries and was transported to Kings Daughters Medical Center by Carter County EMS where he was treated and released.

SGT Aaron Martin is the investigating officer.
