Fatal motorcycle collision in Letcher County

(Hazard, Ky.) -- US Highway 23 was closed for over an hour this morning (07/29/2011) in Jenkins due to a fatal traffic collision which claimed the life of a Clintwood, VA man. The accident was reported to KSP Post in Hazard at 6:41 A.M. when a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle operated by Jimmy Travis Walker, AGE 40 of Clintwood, VA was passing another motorist & struck a 1999 Kenworth tractor/trailer truck operated by Bobby D. Morris, age 47, of Whitesburg, KY which had pulled onto Highway 23. The motorcyclist was wearing a safety helmet but was unable to avoid a collision & struck a rear tire of the coal truck trailer resulting in fatal injuries. The operator of the motorcycle Jimmy Travis Walker, age 40 of Clintwood, VA was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision by the Letcher County Coroner's Office. The operator of the coal truck was not injured during the collision. Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Tommy Gearheart is in charge of the accident investigation. The Jenkins Police & Jenkins Fire Department also responded and assisted with this collision.
