One killed in a single vehicle collision on Highway 15 in Knott County

(Hazard, Ky.) -- A single vehicle collision along Red Fox Road (Highway 15) in Knott County has claimed the life of a Laurel County man. The collision happened at approximately 8:35 A.M. on Monday July 25th when a 2001 Peterbilt tractor-trailer owned by Watco, LLC of Somerset loaded with landfill garbage was traveling north on Highway 15 & suddenly veered off the roadway striking a guardrail & overturning. The driver of the vehicle Chester Smith, age 46 of London, KY was not wearing a seat belt and was trapped inside the vehicle prior to being extricated by Letcher Fire & Rescue along with Vicco/Sassafras fire Department. Chester Smith was pronounced deceased by Knott County Coroner Jeff Blair.

The collision is being investigated by Kentucky State Police Trooper Joe Dials and Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer Anthony Bersaglia.
