Three drown in the Kentucky River

(Hazard, Ky.) -- On 7/04/2011 at approximately 1925 hours KSP received a call of a possible drowning in the Hyden Community of Leslie County. Trp respond to HWY 421 near Leslie County High School advised four subjects were swimming in the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River, above the dam. One subject was carried over the dam by a strong current. The other three subjects attempted to rescue the victim when they were also carried over the dam by the currents. Larry Blevins was pronounced deceased at the scene and Kendall Estep was pronounced deceased at the Mary Breckenridge Hospital a short time later by Leslie County Deputy Coroner Jimmy Darrell Couch. A search of the area for the third victim, Tim Blevins, was conducted by several local fire department units and the Floyd County Swift Water Rescue Team with no immediate success. The search was called off during the overnight hours and resumed shortly after dawn. Tim Blevins was located and his body recovered approximately one-half mile below the dam. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Leslie County Coroner. These deaths remain under investigation by Detective Gary Sandlin U/735. No foul play is suspected at this time.
