Man Fires Shots At Police In Breathitt County Update

(Hazard, Ky.) -- The Breathitt County man that fired shots at police on Monday was positively identified by fingerprints at the State Medical Examiner's Office yesterday. The individual has been identified as Jeffrey L. Southwood, age 45, of Clayhole in Breathitt County. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Southwood died of a gunshot wound to the leg. The investigation is continuing by the Kentucky State Police.

Man Fires Shots At Police In Breathitt County

(Hazard, Ky.) -- On May 9, 2011 at approximately 12:11 p.m. Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard received a complaint from Jackson Police Department. The complaint consisted of a possible intoxicated and reckless driver operating a blue dodge truck on Hwy 476 in the Clayhole Community of Breathitt County. Kentucky State Police, CVE, and Breathitt County Sheriff's Department patrolled the area and located a parked truck matching the description of the suspect vehicle. Officers requested a tow truck to remove the vehicle and shortly afterwards shot were fired at officers from the woods. Officers returned fire and took cover until the area was secured. Kentucky State Police Special Team conducted a search of the wooded area where the shots were fired at the officers and a white male was from deceased from a gunshot wound. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Breathitt County Coroner and the body has been taken to the medical examiners office for an autopsy and a positive identification. Investigation is continuing by the Kentucky State Police.
