Cell phone and speeding leads to reckless homicide charge

(Post 12 Frankfort) -- The Kentucky State Police have concluded their investigation of a January 2011 collision in Franklin County that resulted in the death of a 17 year old Frankfort resident. On October 5, 2011 the Kentucky State Police presented their findings to a Franklin County Grand Jury which in turn returned an Indictment charging Kevin R. Butler with Reckless Homicide. The Kentucky State Police collision investigation determined that Butler was speeding, distracted by a cell phone and ran a red light causing the collision.

Fatal collision on US 127 in Franklin County

(Post 12 Frankfort) -- Kevin R. Butler was operating a 2002 Chevrolet Utility vehicle south bound on US 127 when witnesses stated that he ran a red light striking a 1999 Toyota which was being operated by 17 year old Trista Shoemaker of Frankfort. Trista Shoemaker died at the scene as a result of the injuries that she sustained in the collision. A 15 year old passenger in her vehicle at the time of the collision was also treated at Franklin County Regional medical Center. Kevin R. Butler was transported by air to UK hospital for injuries he sustained in the collision.
The collision is under investigation by the Kentucky State Police Post 12 Reconstruction Team. Post 12 is asking for anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Trooper Hunter Martin at KSP Post 12. 502-227-2221.
