Scam Investigation in Clay County
Date of News Release: 10/07/11
(LONDON, KY.) –- On Friday, October 7, 2011, at 11:00 AM, KSP Post 11, London received a request for assistance from the New York State Police in reference to an investigation into the Fraudulent use of a Credit Card.
Their investigation into the fraudulent usage led to the discovery of numerous items, purchased using the card, being shipped to an address on Sextons Creek in Clay County Kentucky.
Trooper Nick Metcalf responded to the residence and learned that several items had been delivered to the residence and then re-shipped to Africa.
Further investigation led to the recovery of numerous items (electronics, clothing, jewelry, etc.) that had been received from the same individual.
This particular scam appears to target persons that utilize online dating sites, with the perpetrator posing as a person in the military that is stationed over seas.
Items are then purchased with stolen funds (credit cards, bank accounts, etc.) and shipped to this person to be re-shipped to another country.
Charges will be dependent on the outcome of the investigation.
Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the Kentucky State Police at 1-800-222-5555 or 1-606-878-6622.
Trooper Metcalf is in charge of the investigation here in Kentucky and was assisted, at the scene, by TFC Don Trosper.
