Assault 3rd on a police officer arrest in Wayne County

Date of News Release: 07/05/2011

(London, Ky.) -- On Tuesday, July 05, 2011 at approximately 12:13 PM, while traveling on Main Street in Monticello, KY KSP Detective Doug Boyd observed a white, 2006, Cadillac, 4 door, car being operated in a reckless manor.

Detective Boyd initiated a traffic stop which continued on Main Street and then turned onto Wayne Street before the driver stopped. Monticello Police Officer Tommy Stinson responded to the location to assist Detective Boyd on the stop.

After making initial contact with the driver, identified as Dustan W. Lair, 27, of Monticello, Detective Boyd was presented with a Federal Bureau of Prisons ID and the driver claimed to be a peace officer. Further investigation led the officers to suspect the driver of Driving Under the Influence.

Officers requested Lair to exit his vehicle, at which time he accelerated and steered to the left striking Detective Boyd, who sustained minor injuries, with the vehicle.

Monticello Police then initiated a vehicle pursuit, with Detective Boyd and the Wayne County Sheriff's Department assisting, which traveled off the street into the yards of several homes. Lair then fled his vehicle on foot and was apprehended a short distance away.

Detective Boyd contacted the Federal Bureau of Prisons to verify Lair's claim of being a Federal Correction's Officer and learned that Lair was not currently employed but had been in the past.

Detective Boyd charged Lair with Reckless Driving, Fleeing or Evading police 1st, No Insurance, No Registration Receipt, Criminal Mischief 3rd, Resisting Arrest, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Impersonating a peace officer and Assault 3rd.

Monticello Police Department charged Lair with Driving Under the Influence.

Lair was lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center.

Detective Boyd is in charge of the investigation and was assisted by the Monticello Police Department and the Wayne County Sheriff's Department.
