Fatal collision on US 119 in Putney, KY

(Putney, Ky.) -- On 2/16/2011 at 7:43am, Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan responded to a fatal crash involving three vehicles on US 119 at Putney, KY. Unit #1 was a 2003 Dodge truck operated by Michael Southerland, age 19 of Wallins, KY and was traveling north on US 119. Unit #2 was a 2001 Mercury car operated by April Williams, age 34 of Baxter, KY and was stopped in the northbound lane of US 119 attempting to turn left onto Cedar Park Road. Unit #3 was a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse operated by Kim Simpson, age 34 of Totz, KY and was traveling southbound on US 119. Mr. Southerland's vehicle ran into the back of Ms. Williams' vehicle and knocked Ms. Williams' vehicle into the southbound lane of US 119 into the oncoming path of Ms. Simpson's vehicle. Ms. Simpson's vehicle front collided into Ms. Williams' vehicle passenger side, knocking Ms. Williams' vehicle into a guardrail on the southbound shoulder of US 119 where it came to final rest. April Williams was pronounced dead at the scene by the Harlan County Coroner. Mr. Southerland and the passenger, Steven Coots age 18 of Cumberland, KY and Ms. Simpson and the passenger, Bradley Simpson age 16 of Totz, Ky were transported to Harlan ARH by Johnson LifeCare. Also assisting at the scene was the Harlan County Rescue Squad and the Harlan County Sheriff's Department. This fatal crash is still under investigation by Detective Michael Cornett of Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan.
