Mining Theft Arrests Knox County

(Barbourville, Ky.) -- On 1/21/2011 at 7:00am, Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan responded to a theft at Alden Resource Mine #3. During this time, Knox County S.O. responded to a domestic complaint in Flat Lick, KY where some mining equipment was located in a vehicle. After further investigation, the equipment was identified as the stolen items from Alden Resource Mine #3. Kenneth Williams, age 31 of Flat Lick, KY who was a former employee of the mine, attempted to take 450 feet of copper mining cable and several items of mining equipment. Mr. Williams was charged with Theft by Unlawful Taking over $10,000 and Criminal Mischief 1st degree. Also arrested for the same charges on the same date was a 15 year old male juvenile. After further investigation on 1/23/2011, a third arrest was made in connection with the mining theft. Arrested was Kevin Carnes, age 32 of Flat Lick, KY who was charged with Theft by Unlawful Taking over $10,000 and Criminal Mischief 1st degree. The cooperation of the two law enforcement agencies working together was the main factor in solving this case and recovering the stolen property. This case is still under investigation by Trooper Curtis Pingleton of Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan.
