Deputy stabbed, Suspect Fatally Shot in Grant County

(Dry Ridge, Ky.) -- On August 16, 2010 at approximately 0200 hours, a Grant County Deputy Sheriff fatally shot a subject armed with a knife after suffering multiple stab wounds. Deputy Kevin Burke, 31, attempted to serve an arrest warrant on James Edward Staton IV, 35, of Williamstown. After a short foot pursuit, Mr. Staton produced a knife and stabbed Deputy Burke numerous times. Deputy Burke was able to draw his service weapon and fire at Mr. Staton. Mr. Staton was fatally wounded and was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputy Burke was transported to University of Cincinnati Hospital by helicopter and treated for his injuries. Deputy Burke has 9 years of law enforcement experience and 3 years of service with the Grant County Sheriff Department.
