Three Injured in a Two Vehicle Collision on I-65

Date of News Release: 04/11/2010

(Elizabethtown, Ky.) -- On April 10, 2010, at 09:55 am Eastern Time, Troopers from the Elizabethtown Kentucky State Police Post were called to the scene of a two-vehicle accident on northbound I-65, approximately 4 miles north of Elizabethtown. Trooper Scott Brown reported that a 1997 Honda Civic, operated by Anthony W Butera (age 20 of Hendersonville, TN), was traveling northbound on I-65, in the left lane, when the vehicle suffered rear tire failure. Mr. Butera lost control of his vehicle, which rotated 180 degrees and collided with the guardrail on the right side. Mr. Butera's vehicle, which was facing southbound, continued its northbound travel when it reentered northbound traffic and was struck by a 2001 Volvo semi-tractor, with trailer, operated by Russell P Westhaver (age 66 of Nova Scotia, Canada). Mr. Westhaver's commercial vehicle continued northbound, with Mr. Butera's vehicle attached to its front, until coming to final rest across all four lanes of northbound traffic. Mr. Butera's passenger car came to final rest in the right lane of travel. Mr. Butera and a rear seat passenger, Jeremy W White (age 19 of Hendersonville, TN), were transported by Hardin County EMS to Hardin Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Christophe M. Hewgley (age 21 of Hendersonville, TN), a front seat passenger in the Butera vehicle, was transported by Air Methods to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Russell Westhaver was not injured.
