Criminal Investigation in Hopkins County

Date of News Release: 04/21/2010

(Madisonville, Ky.) -- KSP Post 2 Madisonville received a complaint of a vicious animal that attacked a neighbor at his residence approximately one mile west of Beulah. Upon arrival, Troopers discovered that Mr. Jimmy Benton had sustained a laceration to his thigh after his neighbor's dog attacked him in the driveway of his residence. Upon further investigation it was found that the dog's owners Valerie Maher and Gregory Walker were in possession of twenty-eight other dogs and cats located both inside and outside of the residence. Troopers then notified Hopkins County Humane Society Animal Control after discovering evidence of neglect by the owners of the animals. All animals at the residence were taken into custody by the Humane Society due to the extremely poor living conditions and lack of care by the owners. The victim, Mr. Benton, was treated at the scene by Med-Center Ambulance for the laceration, but refused transport by ambulance his injury. Valerie Maher was charged with Cruelty to Animals 2nd degree - 28 Counts; Harboring a Vicious Animal. Gregory Walker was charged with Cruelty to Animals 2nd degree - 28 Counts; Harboring a Vicious Animal; Warrant served for other agency X 2; Resisting Arrest. Both were lodged into the Hopkins County Detention Center.
