Fatal Accidental Shooting in Graves County

Date of News Release: 11/27/2010

(Mayfield, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources are currently investigating a deadly accidental shooting in Graves County. At approximately 2:47 PM, Kentucky State Police were dispatched to a field near the end of Diel Road in east Graves County in response to a hunting incident which left a 15-year-old juvenile female wounded. Upon arrival by KSP investigators, it was determined that the shooting took place after another 15-year-old male was attempting to load a rifle in preparation for hunting in the area. The preliminary investigation revealed that as the juvenile male was loading the rifle, the weapon was inadvertently discharged and struck the juvenile female in the chest. The female's father was present and dialed 911 immediately. The victim was transported by ambulance to Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield where she succumbed to her injuries. The female is identified as 15-year-old Torri Burkey of Almo in Calloway County.

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources also responded to the scene and are conducting an investigation of their own due to the incident being hunting related. The Kentucky State Police are conducting a non-criminal death investigation into the shooting. Both the Kentucky State Police and the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources continue to investigate.

Inquires regarding the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources investigation can be referred to Sgt. Garry Clark with KDFWR.
