One Injured in a Single Vehicle Collision on US 60

Date of News Release: 03/19/2010

(Mayfield, Ky.) -- Operator Paul Birk was responding to a report of a field fire near Burna, KY, and was operating his pickup truck with emergency lights and siren active. While negotiating an east bound curve on US 60, Mr. Birk attempted to pass a slowing vehicle he was overtaking. Mr. Birk did not immediately observe the approach of a west bound vehicle, and attempted to cross back into the east bound lane. Mr. Birk ran off the right shoulder of the highway, missing both vehicles, and over corrected left. The vehicle continued across the roadway and ran off the west bound shoulder. Continuing down an embankment, the pickup struck a tree, rotated, and crossed a deep ravine. The truck then struck a second tree, coming to final rest. Mr. Birk was trapped inside the vehicle and subsequently extricated by Smithland and Burna Volunteer Fire Departments. Mr. Birk was flown to St. Mary's hospital in serious condition.
