Phone Scams in Henderson/Union Counties
Date of News Release: 09/03/2010
(Henderson, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police are investigating complaints of possible fraudulent phone calls in Henderson/Union Counties. Complainants state they are receiving calls from a male with a heavy accent identifying him as an agent with American Winners International (AWI). The "agent" acknowledges the persons phone number and residential address before asking a series of personal questions. The questions range from marital statues, banking information to dependants.
The representative of AWI claims they have won anywhere from $750,000 to $2.5 million. American Winners International requests the victim send a $399 Western Union money order to their location in Jamaica to secure their winners receipt or they can purchase this receipt over the phone by credit card.
Luckily the complainants recognized this as a fraud and reported this to the state police; however, there maybe some that have provided sensitive personal information or sent said company a money order. We recommend those who receive a similar call to use good judgment and not fall victim to a scam without researching the company/caller.
