Adair County Man Arrested on Multiple Charges

(Columbia, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police are currently investigating an incident that occurred today (10/03/2010) at approximately 2:15 CST on Melson Ridge Road in Adair County. 60-year-old Phillip D. Cape was charged with Receiving Stolen Property over $10,000, DUI 2nd with aggravating circumstances, Resisting Arrest, Menacing and Driving on Suspended Operator's License.
Investigators learned that Mr. Cape, operating a stolen 1999 Ford pickup, had been to the residence of 60-year-old Marcine Melson. While driving the truck, Mr. Cape intentionally drove through an attached porch of the residence and struck 3 persons. Marcine Melson, 30-year-old-Brandy Lawless and 63-year-old Irene Firkin. Marcine Melson, after being struck, retrieved a shotgun and fired a round at the Ford pickup. Mr. Cape was struck and drove the vehicle off of the roadway where it came to rest in a field.
When Troopers arrived on the scene, Mr. Cape was apprehended and treatment for his injuries sustained from the gunshot was administered by local EMS. He was later airlifted to University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. The 3 victims struck by the vehicle were treated at the scene and transported to Westlake Hospital in Adair County where they are being treated for non life threatening injuries.
The calls to Post 15 originated from the Adair County dispatch. Detective Mike Dubree is investigating and more charges are expected.
