Felony Arrests in in Boyd County

Bruce Sparks Jr(Ashland, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police has arrested a Floyd County resident on drug related charges following a traffic stop on October 9, 2010 in Boyd County. Bruce Sparks Jr. age 18 of Prestonsburg was arrested after he was stopped for suspected DUI.

Trooper Jeff Kelly was on patrol in the Burnaugh area of US 23 when he received a complaint about a possible DUI on US 23. Trooper Kelly located the 2003 Ford Ranger travelling North on US 23. When Kelly initiated his emergency equipment, the vehicle sped into the Burnaugh BP in an attempt to hide from police. After Kelly located the vehicle with Sparks and a female juvenile passenger, he obtained consent to search the vehicle and located a large amount of marijuana concealed inside the truck. Kelly also located a handgun concealed inside the vehicle as well as a large amount of cash on Sparks.

Sparks was charged with three felonies to include: Trafficking in Marijuana, Possession of Marijuana, and Unlawful Transaction with a Minor. He was also charged with several Misdemeanor charges to include: DUI 1st Offense, Carrying a Concealed Deadly Weapon, Fleeing and Evading 2nd, and other traffic related offenses.

Sparks was lodged in the Boyd County Detention center and his vehicle was impounded.

The investigation continues by Trooper Jeff Kelly.
