Drug Seizure in Carter County

(Ashland, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police in Ashland have arrested a Carter County resident after a traffic stop in Carter City, KY yesterday evening around 7 pm. Trooper Jarrod Smith and Trooper Gary Ridener were conducting a traffic checkpoint at the junction of KY 474 and KY 2 when Rick Varney, age 50 of Olive Hill, KY proceeded into the checkpoint operating a 2000 Buick Century. An investigation revealed Varney had an active warrant for Assault 1st Degree. Further investigation revealed a strong odor of marijuana coming from the trunk of Varney's vehicle. Varney was arrested and transported and lodged in the Carter County Detention Center. A search warrant was obtained for Varney's vehicle and a large amount of marijuana was located inside the trunk. Varney was later charged with Trafficking in Marijuana 2nd Offense (5oz to 5 lbs.)
