Helicopter Makes An Emergency Landing In Letcher County

(Hazard, Ky.) -- On December 10, 2010 at approximately 11:51 a.m. Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard received a call reference a helicopter making an emergency landing in the Van community of Letcher County. Letcher County Sheriff's Department, Kentucky State Police and EMS responded to the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a helicopter operated by 56 year old Tim Kearns of Beaver, WVa. struck a power line near Ky. 15 causing damage to the aircraft. The aircraft was contracted to survey power lines providing service to United Coal. The aircraft was a 1979 Bell 206B Ranger 3. The operator of the helicopter was transported to the Whitesburg ARH where he was treated and released with minor injuries. Two passengers in the aircraft Mike Lasso with American Electric Power and Edd Toppings with United Coal were not injured in the incident. Two vehicles received minor damages when the power line was knocked down by the aircraft. Kentucky State Police and Federal Agencies are continuing the investigation.
