One Killed and One Injured in a Head-On Collision on KY 15

(Hazard, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard was notified shortly after 5:00 A.M. of a 2 vehicle collision along Smithboro Road (KY Highway 15) near the Knott/Perry County line. A red Pontiac passenger car being operated by Terry L. Lucas of the Pistol City community of Letcher County was traveling north on Highway 15 when his vehicle crossed the center line colliding head on with a grey 2005 Ford truck being operated by Brandon Howard of the Chavies community of Perry County. The impact of the collision resulted in the Ford truck rolling over and catching fire. Terry L. Lucas, age 48 who was not wearing a seat belt was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knott County Coroner Jeff Blair. The driver of the second vehicle who was wearing a seat belt was removed from the burning vehicle by a passing motorist & was transported to the Whitesburg ARH Emergency Room by the Knott County Tran-Star Ambulance service, where he was treated and released. Trooper First Class Derek Hall is in charge of the accident reconstruction. No criminal charges will be filed at this time.
