Infant Death Investigation in Breathitt County

(Hazard, Ky.) -- On May 15, 2010 a female infant was brought into the Kentucky River Regional Medical Center in Jackson, Kentucky after being found unresponsive and not breathing. The infant was then transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

On May 17, 2010 Kentucky State Police Post 13 was notified by the Office of Protection and Permanency's Centralized Investigations Unit of the incident and the infant's injuries. Detectives Gary Scott Sandlin, Unit 735 and Douglas Gay, Unit 358 were dispatched to investigate. At that point an investigation was opened for Criminal Abuse 1st degree but no suspects had been named.

On May 22, 2010, The University of Kentucky Medical Center reported that the female infant had passed away. The infant's body has been sent to Frankfort for autopsy by the State Medical Examiners Office and results are pending. The investigation surrounding the cause of the infant's injuries and death is ongoing.
