One Killed and One Charged in a Fatal Collision

(Baxter, Ky.) -- On 4/30/2010 at 12:06 am, Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan responded to a single vehicle crash on KY 522 in the community of Rosspoint, KY. Unit 1 was operated by Matthew Merriman, age 27 of Payne, Ohio. Mr. Merriman was traveling on KY 522 and lost control of the vehicle and overturned. A passenger, Janie Simpson, age 50 of Loyall, Ky was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. Mr. Merriman was charged with Manslaughter 1st, two counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st, Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Drugs/Alcohol and Driving on Suspended License. Mr. Merriman was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center. This fatal crash is still under investigation by Trooper Kevin Miller of Kentucky State Police Post 10 Harlan.
