Pike County Man Killed on an ATV

Date of News Release: 09/14/2009

(Pikeville, Ky.) -- At approximately 6:07 pm on Sunday, September 13th, the Kentucky State Police post in Pikeville received a call of a four-wheeler accident on Pinsonfork of McAndrews in Pike county. Trooper Hoyt Smith responded and later advised that it appeared as if the ATV on which 31 year old Joseph V. Smith of McAndrews had been operating had left the roadway, he had overcorrected, and went over an embankment into a ditch. Pike County Coroner Russell Roberts and Deputy Coroner Mike Hall both responded and pronounced the victim dead on scene. There were no other injuries and the victim's family members were notified. Also assisting Trooper Smith on scene were Appalachian First Response ambulance service and members of the Upper Pond Creek Volunteer Fire Department. The accident is still under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
