Fatal Collision on US 23 in Shelby Valley, Ky

(Pikeville, Ky.) -- 70 year old Floyd Chaney of Red Creek and a female passenger attempted to enter onto U.S. Hwy 23 north from Douglas Drive in front of Shelby Valley High School when he pulled into the path of a northbound vehicle being driven by Marigo Werner of Pikeville. Mr. Chaney and both Ms. Werner and her infant occupant were transported by ambulance to a local hospital where Mr. Chaney later succumbed to his injuries. The other parties were both listed in stable condition.

A female occupant in Mr. Chaney's vehicle, Madonna Chaney, was airlifted to Cabell-Huntington Hospital where she is listed in serious condition. The collision is under investigation by Kentucky State Police Accident Reconstructionist Eddie Crum. Assisting on scene were Sgt. Darren Stapleton, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers, DHP Ambulance Service, Shelby Valley Fire Dept, District 12 Highway Department, and Air Methods Of Ky Aeromedical.
