Fatal Collision on I-71 in Gallatin County

(Campbellsburg, Ky.) -- On Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at approximately 11:30 a.m. the Kentucky State Police responded to a single vehicle fatal collision at mile marker 63 south bound on Interstate 71 in Gallatin County.

A commercial vehicle being driven by Samuel E. Utomi age 42 from Newnan, Georgia was traveling south bound on Interstate 71 in the slow lane when the semi tractor and trailer left the right side of the highway and traveled through the guardrail and over an embankment. The truck tractor and trailer became separated upon contact with the earth embankment after leaving the road. The truck then overturned and came to final rest in a lower drainage ditch. Both the truck and trailer caught fire as a result of the collision. Samuel E. Utomi was pronounced dead at the scene by the Gallatin County Coroner, Utomi was ejected from the vehicle and was reportedly not wearing his seatbelt.

The collision is currently under investigation by Trooper Chris Clark with the Kentucky State Police. Assisting at the scene was Trooper Kurt Buhts with the Kentucky State Police, the Glencoe Fire Department, Gallatin County Fire Department, The State Fire Marshall, Gallatin County Sheriff's Office, and the Gallatin County Coroner.
