Hit & Run Crash Involving DUI

(Madisonville, Ky.) -- Karen Whitaker was operating a 1999 Ford Focus southbound on the Edward T. Breathitt (Pennyrile Parkway). Dennis Olejniczak was operating a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox southbound on the Edward T. Breathitt (Pennyrile Parkway) traveling at an apparent high rate of speed. Mr. Olejniczak was approaching Mrs. Whitaker at an apparent high rate of speed and applied his brakes in order to avoid a collision. The front, passenger side of Mr. Olejniczak's vehicle struck the rear, driver's side of Mrs. Whitaker's vehicle. Mrs. Whitaker's vehicle began to rotate clockwise as it exited the southbound shoulder of the roadway. Her vehicle struck a light pole and came to rest facing west on the southbound shoulder. Mrs. Whitaker was transported by ambulance to the Regional Medical Center for treatment. She was wearing a seat belt. Mr. Olejniczak did not stop and fled the scene of the crash.

Mr. Olejniczak was located on the Western Kentucky Parkway in Caldwell County after the Kentucky State Police received a complaint of a reckless driving vehicle which matched the description of the vehicle involved in Mrs. Whitaker's crash. During the traffic stop conducted on Mr. Olejniczak's vehicle, it was determined that he was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Mr. Olejniczak was arrested and charged with the DUI 2nd Offense, Leaving the Scene of an Accident/Failure to Render Aid, No Insurance 1st Offense, Open Alcoholic Beverage Container in Motor Vehicle Prohibited, Operating on DUI Suspended License, Possession of Revoked/Suspended Operator's License & Wanton Endangerment. He was lodged in the Caldwell County Detention Center.
