Madisonville, KY - On Thursday, January 01, 2009, at approximately 4:39 a.m. CST, Trooper Mitch Hampton attempted to stop a vehicle that was traveling southbound on the Edward T. Breathitt Parkway (Pennyrile Parkway) for suspicion of DUI.

After stopping the vehicle at approximately the 51 mile-marker, Trooper Hampton summoned the driver with his public address (PA) system. As Trooper Hampton was establishing communication with the driver, he heard what he believed to be a gunshot coming from the suspect vehicle.

Additional Post 2 units responded to the scene. Upon inspecting the vehicle, troopers and detectives located a single, male occupant sitting in the driver's seat. The Hopkins County Coroner's Office pronounced the victim dead at the scene. No one else was in the vehicle. The victim has been identified as Michael D. Black, age 28, of Evansville, IN.
