Death Investigation in Trigg County

Date of News Release: 05/07/2009

(Cerulean, Ky.) -- At approximately 0752 hours, Kentucky State Police received a call of an accidental death in Cerulean, KY. Weaver W. Shirk, 45 year-old from Cerulean, was loading lumber onto a flatbed semi trailer at a lumber yard on Buffalo Cerulean Road. The lumber was hoisted and led out of a bay door. As the truck backed into position, the shroud on top of the truck and muffler struck an I-beam. Mr. Shirk was on the ground motioning the truck into position. The truck driver, Ned Thalmann 68 year-old from Hopkinsville was operating a 1994 Freightliner when he heard the impact and stopped. Mr. Thalmann realizing that he had hit the I-beam, pulled forward. As the truck moved forward, the I-beam was knocked loose and fell down. The load, which was already in motion, fell down towards the truck. Mr. Shirk, trying to stop the load from hitting the truck, was pinned between the load and the flatbed. Mr. Shirk was fatally injured in the incident. Kentucky State Police was assisted by the Trigg County Sheriffs Department, Trigg County Rescue Squad, Trigg County EMS, Cerulean Fire Department and the Trigg County Coroner. The investigation continues by Trooper Billy Over.
