Calvert City Police Officer Involved Shooting

(Calvert City, KY) - Kentucky State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred Saturday night in Calvert City. On January 31st, at approximately 11:00 PM, Calvert City Police responded to a complaint of a suicidal male on Herring Drive in Calvert City. Sergeant Richard Sullivan Jr., Captain Hoye Filbeck, and Officer Robert West, responded to the residence. Officers approached the residence and were met at the front door by Thomas McMurtry, 77-years-old. Mr. McMurtry was holding a semi-automatic pistol. After brief communication between officers and Mr. McMurtry, and numerous orders for him to drop the handgun, Mr. McMurtry raised and pointed the gun at Sergeant Sullivan. Sergeant Sullivan discharged his service weapon striking Mr. McMurtry. Emergency Medical Services were immediately called to the scene and transported Mr. McMurtry to Lourdes Hospital where he is currently listed in stable condition. At the request of Calvert City Police, Kentucky State Police are investigating the incident. The investigation is ongoing by Sergeant Sam Steger with the Kentucky State Police.
