Text Scam Alert
Date of News Release: 10/10/2009
(Henderson, Ky.) -- The Kentucky State Police in Henderson has received numerous complaints of texting scams from the public in Ohio and Daviess Counties. Those affected stated they received a text message stating it is from Credit Union Co-op. The message further reads that the receiver needs to reply with their banking personal identification number (PIN) in order to reactivate their debit card that had been deactivated.
All of those that have received this text stated it is from an (877) or similar number that they didn't recognize. This is a national scam that has now regionalized.
It seems to be affecting local AT&T customers for now; however, that doesn't mean exclusive.
We are encouraging the public to be extra cautious if they find themselves to be a recipient of a similar text. Common sense needs to apply and not respond to this text. Banking institutions will not text requesting your personal banking information---especially over the weekend.
If you have responded to this text, you need to contact your respective bank immediately. Further complaints can be made to the Kentucky Attorney Generals Office Fraud Department at (502)696-5300 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Making proper notification to the recipient's cellular carrier fraud department is also highly recommended.
